SHILAJIT: The Smelly Superfood

My Dear Health Enthusiasts,

I started writing about Shilajit after my AMAZING trip up to the Himalays, around the same time as the seed was planted to start SHILAJOY. But I have realized, some of you have never ever heard of shilajit before. So, here it is: SHILAJIT 101! The who, what, when where and why.

What is Shilajit?

Shilajit, is a sticky, black resin substance found in the Himalayas and other mountainous regions, has been revered for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. (We’ll talk about Ayurvedic medicine another time.) While its health benefits are well-documented, there’s no denying its strong odor and taste. Let’s face it, although shilajit resin smells and tastes the way it does, it’s worth enduring for its incredible properties.

Why Does Shilajit Smell So Bad?

Shilajit is a concentrated mineral and organic matter that has been trapped in rocks for millions of years. As it decomposes, it releases a pungent odor that is often described as earthy, smoky, or even slightly metallic. This smell is a result of the various organic compounds and minerals present in the substance.

Interestingly enough, the specific odor can vary slightly depending on the source of the shilajit and its age. The strong scent is a defining characteristic of its authenticity. While many people find the smell unpleasant at first, once you’ve tried it a few times, you’ll easily be accustomed to it or even appreciate its unique aroma.

Why Does Shilajit Taste So Bad?

The taste of shilajit is equally distinctive. The first time you try it, you may describe the taste as bitter, astringent, or even slightly salty. This taste is due to the high concentration of minerals and other bioactive compounds found in the substance.

The bitterness and astringency of shilajit can be attributed to its tannins, which are compounds that give plants their astringent flavor. These tannins also contribute to the substance's antioxidant properties. Additionally, the high mineral content can contribute to the salty or metallic taste.

What’s the Best Way to Take shilajit so the strong flavor is Masked?

Take a small portion (pea-sized) shilajit and dissolve it in milk, warm water, or even tea. If you need to mask the flavor even further, add a squeeze of lemon or lime to help to brighten the flavor and balance the bitterness.

The Health Benefits of Shilajit

Despite its unpleasant odor and taste, shilajit is renowned for its numerous health benefits. Here are some of the key reasons why people choose to incorporate shilajit into their daily routine:

  • Energy Booster

  • Antioxidant Powerhouse

  • Supports Brain Health

  • Enhances Male Fertility

  • Promotes Muscle Growth

  • Supports Heart Health

While the odor and taste of shilajit may be off-putting to some, its potential health benefits make it a valuable addition to many people's wellness routines. If you're considering trying shilajit, it's important to choose a high-quality product and consult with a healthcare professional to discuss its suitability for your individual needs.
